Code to Inspire teaches Afghan women computer coding skills and empowers them to find employment or pursue their own entrepreneurial ventures.

Code to Inspire provides a number of courses and resources to Afghan women which are aimed at enabling women to attain employment that is financially viable and socially accessible. Code to Inspire provides courses in coding, access to tech and professional resources, as well as help with job placements. Participants are given one year of free education in coding educational games and mobile applications. Code to Inspire also develops strategic partnerships with corporations and non-profits so that its students will have internships, employment opportunities or entrepreneurial opportunities after graduation.

In regions where women’s travel can be heavily restricted, the ability to work remotely is crucial in helping women access employment. To strengthen economic security, Code to Inspire has teamed up with Bitcoin to quickly and safely connect the participating women to the global economy. Code to Inspire is currently educating 50 students aged 15 to 25.

We are empowering women and girls in Afghanistan with high-tech skills to be digital citizens of the world, without considering geographical barriers.

Why you should care

Currently, 68% of young women in Afghanistan have no formal education and are illiterate, according to Code to Inspire. The organisation addresses this crisis by providing women with the skills and education needed to compete and succeed in the digital global marketplace, thus helping to build more equal and sustainable societies.

How the Global Goals are addressed

No Poverty

When women get control over their income they typically invest in the health and education of their children, which reduces poverty over time.

SDG4 Quality education

Quality Education

It is estimated that 85% of Afghan women have had no formal education. This coding school helps to bring that figure down, in a modern and highly employable subject area.

SDG5

Gender Equality

Code to Inspire provides a safe space for the education and empowerment of young women with computer coding skills, helping to rebalance gender equality in Afghanistan.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

Code to Inspire aims to increase the working opportunities for Afghan women, who currently represent only 16% of the national workforce.
